Barak Valley News : The traditional educational institution Government Victoria Memorial Higher Secondary School is going to start the curriculum of English medium along with Bengali medium this time. There is a full possibility of starting English medium from the next academic year, said Tridib Roy, Additional District Commissioner in charge of Hailakandi District Education Department.
The Additional District Commissioner was informed in this regard by the Director of Education Department from Guwahati on Wednesday. In this regard, Additional District Commissioner Tridib Roy told the media that this school, which was established in English in 1903. The traditional educational institution has started admitting girls as well as boys since the last academic year. But even then, there are repeated complaints from various quarters. In order to increase the number of students in this traditional educational institution, English medium is being used in addition to Bengali.
There was a demand to introduce the medium curriculum. So, in April, he had requested the Director of the Higher Education Department to take action in this regard. He said that the traditional Government Victoria Memorial Higher Secondary School of Barak Valley and Hailakandi district. Students will get the opportunity to study in English medium from class 1 to class 12 along with Bengali medium. The only one among the three districts of Barak Valley, the Government Victoria Memorial Higher Secondary School of Hailakandi, has been declared an English medium school along with Bengali medium by the state's School Education Department. Such instructions came from Guwahati to Additional District Magistrate Tridib Roy, in charge of the education department of Hailakandi district, on Wednesday.
The Deputy Secretary
of the State School Education Department, Manoranjan Talukder, informed the
Director of Secondary Education, Kahilipara, Guwahati, in a letter on
Wednesday. In a letter to Director of Secondary Education Mamata Hojai, Deputy
Secretary, School Education Department, Manoranjan Talukder mentioned, "We
are very happy that the State Education Department has started English medium
teaching in Government Victoria Memorial Higher Secondary School, Hailakandi.
This school under the Assam State School Education Board will start teaching in
English medium with adequate teachers from the next academic year." The
letter also mentioned the provision of free textbooks for the English medium
branch.
Meanwhile, the news has been applauded from various quarters for spreading on social media. Tridib Babu said that admission of girls has started from this academic year, which was only for boys in the past. Besides, the work of the new building of the school is going on vigorously at a cost of 8 crore, so this new class can be started in the next academic year. Incidentally, due to the very low number of students in this traditional school in Hailakandi district, there were demands from various quarters to lobby on how to strengthen the school further. Tridib Roy said that from the 2026-27 academic year, English medium will be introduced in this school along with Bengali.
Students from class 5 to class 12 will be able to take admission in
any medium if they wish. He said that this is the first time in Hailakandi
district and Barak Valley. However, he said that so far, only male students
have been admitted in this school. From the current academic year, female
students have also been admitted along with 2026-27 students. Principal
Rajshree Sarkar said that more than 30 students have already been admitted.
